Agribusiness giant Cargill has become the first in the industry to sell carbon offsets generated through its High River, AB beef operation. Rather than use its sprawling land holdings as a carbon sink, Cargill is capturing methane from its wastewater lagoons to reduce its natural gas usage by 25%. The resultant 400,000 tons of offsets were sold through the Canadian Standards Association. (Source: Environmental Leader, June 9, 2009).
